I'm sure most of you have heard about the cost savings actions being studied by the USPS nationwide. It has now hit the TN District. The studies include moving intermediate routes to the head out office and Delivery Unit Optimization.
District Manager Gamble and staff met with East TN this week. They are proceeding with the Delivery Unit Optimization. It is my understanding that the MPOO's were given an August 30th deadline to submit a list of offices in their areas that potentially met the criteria. They are looking at ALL offices; but will begin with vacant offices first. Criteria:
Is there space available at the "gaining" unit for up to 9 additional routes
Is there adequate parking/dock space at the "gaining" unit
Can the gaining unit facilitate the additional scheme
Is the losing unit to the gaining unit less than 10 miles
Does the unit employ one or more clerks
The District and the SE Area office will begin doing cost analysis. If there is not a cost savings they will not proceed with the office change.
If it happens in your office, the routes could be reworked, clerks would be relocated, and your offices hours could be changed. The losing Postmaster would have saved grade for 2 years. After two years the Postmaster will have saved pay but the office level will change. The losing Post Office will not be closed. The losing Postmaster would work the window and maintain the P.O. Boxes.
The other cost savings action they are looking at is moving intermediate routes to the head out office.
National VP Jack Swann and myself are staying on top of this and will keep you posted on whats going on.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
